I Want A Comfy Chair, damn it!

“Mom, here’s the thing I don’t understand about school…how come only the teachers get the comfy chairs? I think I would learn a lot better if I had a comfy chair, too.”    Jay-8

I think the kid’s got a point. Right this very second, I am sitting in an extremely uncomfortable chair and I can’t think of a single witty thing to write. I’ve got nothing. Maybe this comfy chair theory should be tested. Here’s what I propose…

1) All students should have a comfy chair. No more uncomfortable, wooden, straight-backed chairs. I want plush, cushy, comfy chairs in all the classrooms.

2) The green vinyl seating on all school buses should be replaced with high-quality, genuine leather, reclining seats.

3) Cafeteria benches should be covered in plush cushions, preferably made with polyester fabric for easy clean-up.

4) All toilet seats should be replaced with state-of-the-art, padded, anti-bacterial seats with optional heating controls.

5) Auditorium seating should be updated to meet current chiropractic standards. Movie theater style seats made of memory foam, including lumbar support, should be considered.

This may be the key to increased performance on state standardized testing, better behavior, longer attention spans, higher GPA’s and increased college-acceptance rates.

Let me ask you, are you sitting in a comfy chair?

  1. I’d be happy if there were more leg room in the school bus.

  2. I definitely work best while sitting on the sofa. Although by “work” in this instance I think I mean sleep, relax, procrastinate…. 🙂

Jay is right on the money!
Yes, at the moment, I am sitting on a comfy couch. However, between you, me and the blogosphere, the chair I use at my boss’ house is awful!
Your proposed chairs sound very comfy, Nancy. Perhaps too comfy – I am feeling a nap coming on.

  4. Sandi Ormsby says:

Hmmm. That could be an award (contest of good behavior) there’s a weekly winner where on Friday’s they get to sit in the teacher’s chair (or offer it up to someone of their choice in the class!)

Do you hear that teachers? Perfect “reward” system! 🙂

I am sitting on my comfy couch. That is where most of my blog posts are inspired. Contrary to popular belief it is not the toilet.

I think all school cafeterias should have a “restaurant” style feel. Seating for about 5 around the table, comfy chairs and a wait staff. It may actually teach kids how to act in a restaurant instead of like little monsters.

  7. Tony McGurk says:

Not on a comfy chair at the moment. Jay has a good point. How many kids backs have been ruined by bad sitting posture? These kids sit on uncomfy chairs all day, 5 days a week.
Ha Ha!!! I just noticed the “Hotdog/dead dog” remark in the sidebar

  8. cooper says:

boy, are your taxes gonna skyrocket!!!!!

forget the Comfy Chair. Cardinal Biggles…poke her with the soft cushions!!!!!

  9. This is actually a very well organized conspiracy to keep us all from falling asleep on the job. Man, if I had one of those ergonomic, massaging, cushy chairs at work, I’d never get anything done.

  10. I got comfy chairs for the classroom I teach in. The problem is that the students lean back and go to sleep….

  11. No, I am sitting in a hardback kitchen table chair. If I was sitting in a comfy chair I’d probably be asleep and not reading your blog.

  12. Carrie says:

Dang…I just THOUGHT I was sitting comfy till I saw what comfy really is!

  13. Interestingly enough, I am a teacher with a comfy chair. That I never get to sit in. I’m more than happy to let me students sit in it, except they try to whirl themselves around until they launch. I’m all for comfy chairs as long as they do not rotate!

  14. Spectra says:

I think parents ought to be allowed to buy chairs for their kids to take to school, from a catologue of accepted models that do not encourage rotation, launching, rocking, squeeking or snoozing. The student could just take the chair with them through the years and replace as they grew. Keeps taxes down. I know, i know, some kids will not be able to afford chairs. Nothing like a community service program to help raise funds, and give kids a direct experience between work and gains. It definitly got me thinking. I had a bad back at a young age, and those hard wooden school chairs were awful.

  15. Binky says:

The problem with giving everyone comfy chairs is that they’ll never get out of them! And we’re already much too inactive. You’re supposed to think better on your feet anyway, so I say make the kids stand!

  16. i am…and i agree with the kid 100%. i failed the astronaut test because on the question “on an 8 man space mission how many bathrooms should there be?” my answer was, of course, 8. what else? if we can’t have a comfy chair than all is lost…all! full marks to Jay…(and you to Nancy.) continue…

  17. Karen says:

Comfy chairs should know, no discrimination!

  18. MJ says:

Oh wow, I just realized I need one also.

  19. ANNIE says:

As an aging Grandma, it doesn’t matter what chair I’m in, I have trouble getting out!
